7 Mistakes You’re Making with Your Summer Bikini Wax (And How to Fix Them)

Summer in Nottingham is finally here, and while we're all ready to trade our jumpers for bikinis and head to the nearest beer garden (or a cheeky flight to Ibiza), there’s one thing that can put a serious dampener on your holiday vibes: a bikini wax gone wrong.

At The Waxing Witch, we’ve seen it all. From the "I shaved two days ago" panic to the "I went to the beach immediately after" disaster. We want your skin to feel as magical as a summer solstice, not irritated and bumpy.

If you’ve ever wondered why your results aren’t as smooth as you’d like, or why you’re suddenly dealing with more ingrown hairs than usual, you’re probably making one of these common mistakes. Don't worry, though: we’re here to help you fix them with our signature "hair hexing" magic.

Here are the 7 biggest mistakes you're making with your summer bikini waxing tips and how to turn your next appointment into a smooth success.

1. Leaving it Until the Last Minute (The "Emergency" Wax)

We get it. You’re packing your bags, you’ve found the perfect swimsuit, and then you realize… you need a wax. Booking your appointment for the afternoon before your flight is a recipe for irritation.

The Fix: You should always aim to get waxed 24 to 48 hours before you plan to hit the pool or the beach. Your pores stay open for a while after waxing, and exposing them to chlorine, salt water, or even heavy sweat can lead to infection or those annoying little red bumps.

Plus, your skin needs time to calm down! We recommend checking out our guide on 10 things you need to know before your waxing appointment to get your timing just right.

2. Sunbathing Right Before (or After!) Your Wax

We know you want that base tan, but sun-kissed skin is often sensitive skin. If you’ve spent the day baking in the sun before your appointment, your skin might be too "hot" or even slightly burnt. This can cause the skin to lift during the waxing process, which is definitely not the kind of magic we want to perform.

The Fix: Avoid direct sun exposure and sunbeds for at least 24 hours before and 48 hours after your wax. If you’ve already caught a bit too much sun, wait until the redness has completely faded before coming into the studio. Your skin's health is our priority!

3. Shaving Between Appointments

It’s tempting, we know. You see a few stray hairs appearing a week before your holiday and reach for the razor. Stop right there! Shaving between waxes is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. It disrupts your hair growth cycle, making the hair grow back thicker and more stubborn.

The Fix: Put the razor in the bin (or at least hide it). For the best results, your hair needs to be about the length of a grain of rice (around 6mm). If you shave, you’re resetting the clock, and we won’t be able to get that super-smooth finish you’re looking for. Consistency is key to a painless, long-lasting wax.

4. Wearing Tight Clothes to Your Appointment

You might love those tight denim shorts or those figure-hugging gym leggings, but they are your skin's worst enemy after a bikini wax. Friction and sweat are the leading causes of post-wax irritation and ingrown hairs.

The Fix: Wear your loose, most comfortable "witchy" attire. Think flowing linen trousers or a loose cotton dress. Giving your skin room to breathe after a wax is essential, especially in the summer heat. This reduces the chance of friction-induced redness and lets those soothing aftercare products do their work.

5. Getting the Exfoliation Balance Wrong

Exfoliation is a bit of a "Goldilocks" situation: you need it to be just right. If you don't exfoliate at all, dead skin cells trap new hairs, causing ingrowns. If you exfoliate too harshly right before your wax, you’ve sensitized the skin too much.

The Fix: Gently exfoliate the area 24-48 hours before your appointment to lift any trapped hairs. Then, wait at least 48 hours after your wax before you start exfoliating again. We recommend using a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliant designed for sensitive areas to keep things smooth without the "ouches."

6. Not Drinking Enough Water

What you put into your body matters just as much as what we put on it. Dehydrated skin is less elastic and more prone to "gripping" the hair, which can make the waxing process a bit more uncomfortable.

The Fix: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your wax keeps your skin supple and healthy. It also helps with the healing process afterward. Think of it as an internal potion for a better waxing experience.

7. Choosing the Wrong Wax (or the Wrong Salon!)

Not all wax is created equal, and neither is every salon. If you’re getting a bikini wax with cheap, low-quality products, your skin is going to feel it.

The Fix: At The Waxing Witch, we don't settle for anything less than the best. We use Italwax Gold for all our intimate waxing (like Brazilians and Hollywoods). It’s a hypoallergenic, low-temperature film wax that grips the hair: not the skin: making it incredibly gentle for your most sensitive areas.

For full body waxing, we use Italwax White Chocolate Cream Wax. It’s super creamy, smells delicious, and is formulated to be kind to the skin while still being a powerhouse at removing hair. Using high-quality Italwax products specifically compared with competitors ensures that your skin stays healthy, hydrated, and "hex-free."

Summer Aftercare for Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, the summer heat can be extra tricky. Here’s our "Enchanted Aftercare" checklist to keep you glowing:

  1. Keep it Cool: Take lukewarm showers for the first 24 hours. Avoid hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms.
  2. Hands Off: As tempting as it is to feel your smooth new skin, avoid touching the area with unwashed hands to prevent bacteria from entering the open follicles.
  3. Soothe the Spell: Apply a fragrance-free, soothing lotion or aloe vera if you feel any heat.
  4. Avoid Fragrance: Skip the perfumed body sprays or scented lotions on the waxed area for at least 48 hours.
  5. Ditch the Gym: Avoid heavy workouts that cause a lot of sweating and friction in the bikini area for a day or two.
