10 Things You Need to Know Before Your Waxing Appointment
Hello, gorgeous! So, you’ve finally decided to ditch the razor and join the coven here at The Waxing Witch? We couldn't be more excited to have you. Whether you’re a total waxing virgin or a seasoned pro looking for a more magical experience, prepping for your appointment is the secret ingredient to a spellbindingly smooth result.
At our studio, we’re all about making you feel empowered, relaxed, and, most importantly, comfortable in your own skin. We know that walking into a waxing appointment can sometimes feel a bit daunting, especially if it’s your first time or if you’ve had a "horror story" experience elsewhere. That’s why we’ve brewed up this guide to help you prepare.
Here are 10 things you need to know before you step into our enchanted studio for your next hair removal spell.
1. The "Grain of Rice" Rule is Real
One of the most common questions we get is: "How long should my hair be?" The answer is simpler than you think, it needs to be about the length of a grain of rice (roughly 1/4 inch).

If the hair is too short, the wax won't be able to get a proper grip, which can lead to missed hairs or breakage. If it’s been a while and things are looking a bit "wild," don't worry! You don't need to trim it yourself. It’s much better for us to have too much to work with than too little. If you've been shaving, try to leave it for at least 2–3 weeks before your appointment to ensure we can get that ultra-smooth finish you're dreaming of.
2. Exfoliation is Your Best Friend (But Not on the Day!)
We love a good scrub, but timing is everything. Gently exfoliating the area you’re getting waxed 24–48 hours before your appointment is a total game-changer. It helps to lift dead skin cells away from the hair follicle, making it easier for the hair to come out and reducing the risk of those pesky ingrowns later on.
However, please don't exfoliate on the actual day of your wax. Waxing itself is a form of exfoliation, and doing both in one day can leave your skin feeling a little too sensitive. Think of it like prepping a canvas before painting, you want it smooth, but you don't want to scrub it raw!
3. Skip the Morning Latte (and the Wine!)
We know, we know, telling a witch to skip her morning potion is a big ask. But trust us on this one! Caffeine and alcohol are both stimulants that can make your skin significantly more sensitive.
Caffeine can tighten your pores and increase your heart rate, which often makes the "ouch" factor a little more intense. Similarly, alcohol can thin your blood and increase sensitivity. For the most comfortable experience, try to stick to water or herbal tea on the day of your appointment. You can have that celebratory glass of wine or double espresso after you’re feeling smooth and fabulous!
4. Arrive with a "Clean Slate"
When you come in for your appointment, we want to work with your skin in its most natural state. This means skipping the lotions, oils, deodorants, and perfumes on the area being treated.

These products can create a barrier between the hair and the wax, causing the wax to slide off rather than grip the hair. Don't worry about being "too dry", our high-quality, skin-kind wax is designed to nourish the skin while it works its magic. Just a quick shower before you arrive is perfect.
5. Dress for Comfort, Not a Fashion Show
Post-wax skin needs room to breathe! After your session, your follicles will be open and your skin might be a little tender. Tight leggings, lacy underwear, or restrictive jeans can cause friction and irritation, which is the last thing you want.

We highly recommend wearing loose, breathable cotton clothing. Think flowy dresses, loose linen trousers, or your favorite soft joggers. If you’re coming in for an intimate wax, choosing clean, breathable cotton underwear will make your skin much happier as you head back out into the world.
6. Check Your "Magic Potions" (Medications)
Certain skincare ingredients and medications can make your skin much thinner and more prone to "lifting" (where the top layer of skin is removed along with the hair).
If you are using Retin-A, Retinol, Accutane, or any strong AHAs/BHAs, please let us know! Usually, you’ll need to stop using these topicals at least a week before your appointment. If you’re on Accutane, you’ll need to wait six months after finishing your course before waxing is safe. Your skin’s health is our top priority, so when in doubt, just ask!
7. Mind Your Moon Cycle
Can you get waxed while you’re on your period? Absolutely! We are a judgment-free studio and "that time of the month" is a natural part of life. Just wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup, and we’re good to go.
However, keep in mind that your body is often much more sensitive during your cycle (and the few days leading up to it). If you have a low pain tolerance, you might find the experience a bit more "spicy" than usual. If you can, try to schedule your appointment for the week after your period when your pain threshold is typically at its highest.
8. Manage the "Ouch" Factor
We’re not going to lie: waxing isn't exactly a spa massage. But it also shouldn't be a torture session! To help manage the discomfort, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen about 30–45 minutes before you arrive. This can help take the edge off and reduce any post-wax inflammation.
At The Waxing Witch, we also use specialized, highly technical techniques and premium, skin-kind wax to make the process as quick and painless as possible. You’re in expert hands!
9. Meet Your Lead Witch (and Breathe!)
When you arrive, you’ll likely be greeted by Sammi, our "Queen of Waxing." Our studio isn't like those cold, clinical salons you might be used to. We’ve created a unique, witch-themed environment that’s cozy, empowering, and completely judgment-free.

If you’re nervous, talk to us! We’ve seen it all, and there is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. Whether it’s your first Brazilian or you’re worried about a bit of "stray hair," we promise you’ll feel relaxed and respected. Remember to breathe through the quick pulls: it really does help!
10. The Magic Doesn't End When You Leave
Preparation is half the battle, but aftercare is where the real magic happens. For the first 24–48 hours after your wax, your skin is in a "healing" phase. This means avoiding anything that could introduce bacteria or heat to the area.

Avoid hot tubs, saunas, heavy exercise (sweat is not your friend right now!), and direct sun exposure. We want to keep those follicles calm and happy! Keep an eye out for our upcoming posts where we'll dive deeper into the "Dos and Don'ts" of post-wax care to keep your skin glowing until your next visit.
