The Aftercare Ritual: How to Keep Your Skin Silky (and Witchy) Long After Your Wax
You’ve finished your appointment, your skin feels beautifully smooth, and you’re ready to float home on a cloud of confidence. Whether you’ve had a Brazilian wax, Hollywood wax, full body waxing or a quick brow shaping tidy-up, the magic doesn’t end when you leave The Waxing Witch.
Think of your appointment as the spell-casting moment. Your waxing aftercare ritual is what keeps the results calm, comfortable and silky for longer.
Freshly waxed skin needs a little kindness while it settles. With the right routine, you can help reduce irritation, support your skin barrier and keep ingrown hairs from joining the coven.
The first 24 hours: cast the cooling spell
Immediately after waxing, the skin may be warm, pink or slightly sensitive. This is particularly common after intimate waxing, as the bikini area contains delicate skin and many hair follicles close together.
For the first day, your main goal is simple: keep everything clean, cool and calm.
Avoid heat and sweat
For around 24–48 hours, try to avoid anything that significantly raises your body temperature or makes you sweat, including:
- Hot baths and steamy showers
- Saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs
- Intense exercise and heavy gym sessions
- Sunbathing and tanning beds
- Swimming pools, especially if the skin feels tender
Heat and sweat can increase redness and irritation around freshly waxed follicles. A quick lukewarm shower is absolutely fine, but this is not the time for a long soak in a bubbling cauldron.
If you’ve had a Brazilian wax or Hollywood wax, you may also want to pause activities that create heat and friction in the intimate area for at least 24 hours. Your skin will appreciate the rest.
Keep your hands off the magic
Smooth skin is extremely tempting to touch. However, freshly waxed skin is more vulnerable to bacteria and irritation, so try not to rub, scratch or repeatedly check the area.
If you need to apply a soothing product, wash your hands first and use a light touch. Otherwise, let your skin enjoy a peaceful, hands-off recovery.
Choose loose, breathable clothing
Tight leggings, skinny jeans and synthetic underwear can create friction and trap heat against newly waxed skin. Instead, choose loose, breathable clothing for the first day.
Soft cotton underwear, relaxed trousers, oversized joggers or a flowing dress are all excellent aftercare attire. Consider it your official post-wax witchy robe.

The first 48 hours: protect your skin barrier
Waxing removes hair from the root and also provides a form of surface exfoliation. That means your skin has already had a treatment, so adding strong products too quickly can leave it feeling overwhelmed.
For the first couple of days, avoid applying the following to the waxed area:
- Perfumed lotions and body sprays
- Deodorant directly over freshly waxed underarms
- Strong acids, including AHAs and BHAs
- Retinol or prescription-strength active products
- Harsh soaps, scrubbing mitts and rough flannels
- Heavy creams that feel greasy or pore-clogging
Instead, keep cleansing gentle and use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser once the skin feels comfortable. If your skin is particularly sensitive, follow the specific advice given by your waxing specialist.
If you use retinoids, exfoliating acids or prescription skincare on the area you want waxed, let us know before your appointment. These products can make skin more delicate and may need to be paused in advance.
After 48–72 hours: begin the exfoliation ritual
Exfoliation is one of the most important parts of long-term waxing aftercare, but timing matters.
Scrubbing too soon can create stinging and irritation because the skin is still settling. Once at least 48 hours have passed, and the area feels calm, you can begin gentle exfoliation. If you are prone to sensitivity, wait closer to 72 hours or until any redness has settled completely.
The aim is not to scrub your skin raw. Gentle, regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that can collect around the follicle and make it more difficult for new hairs to grow through the surface.
Our recommended post-wax potion: Ruff Stuff scrubs
At The Waxing Witch, we love Ruff Stuff scrubs as part of a sensible maintenance routine. Ruff Stuff was created by a waxing specialist and offers sugar-based body scrubs designed to help keep skin smooth between appointments.
The sugar exfoliates gently, while the nourishing formula helps leave skin feeling soft rather than stripped. You can explore Ruff Stuff’s scrubs here.
To use your scrub:
- Apply a small amount to damp skin at the end of your shower.
- Massage using very light circular movements.
- Focus on areas that are more likely to experience ingrown hairs, such as the bikini line, underarms, backs of thighs and legs.
- Rinse thoroughly and pat the skin dry.
- Follow with a light moisturiser or suitable body oil.
For intimate waxing, use scrub only on external skin such as the pubic mound and bikini line. Avoid internal or mucous membrane areas, and never apply it to broken, sore or actively irritated skin.
Although Ruff Stuff is made for regular use, your skin gets the final say. Start with two or three gentle applications per week. If your skin remains comfortable, you can adjust from there. Stop if you experience persistent stinging, increased redness or soreness.
The hydration charm: moisturise consistently
Exfoliation works best when paired with hydration. Dry, flaky skin can make it harder for new hairs to emerge smoothly, increasing the chance of bumps and ingrown hairs.
Once the first 24–48 hours have passed, moisturise the waxed area regularly with a gentle product. Look for something lightweight and skin-kind, particularly if you are caring for the bikini area or underarms.
Daily hydration is especially helpful before your next appointment. Soft, supple skin allows the hair to release more easily during waxing, which can support a more comfortable treatment.
You can also use the Ruff Stuff nourishing body oil on suitable body areas if your skin enjoys a little extra moisture. As always, avoid applying heavily fragranced oils to freshly waxed intimate skin unless your professional has specifically recommended them.

Keep your wax working its magic
For the smoothest long-term results, try to stay consistent with your appointments. Waxing works with your natural hair-growth cycle, so regular treatments can help the regrowth feel softer and more manageable over time.
Between appointments:
- Avoid shaving wherever possible.
- Don’t pick, squeeze or dig at ingrown hairs.
- Keep exfoliation gentle and regular.
- Moisturise daily once the skin has settled.
- Wear breathable fabrics when the area feels sensitive.
- Contact your waxing specialist if you are unsure about a reaction.
A stray hair is not an emergency. Put down the tweezers, resist the razor and let your next appointment take care of it. Shaving between waxes can interrupt your hair-growth cycle and make future treatments less consistent.
A note for every kind of waxing
Different services may need slightly different aftercare attention.
Brazilian wax and Hollywood wax
These intimate waxing services benefit from avoiding heat, sweat and friction for at least 24 hours. Choose breathable underwear, keep products simple and begin gentle exfoliation only once the skin feels calm.
If you are new to intimate waxing, our guide to your first Hollywood wax can help you feel prepared.
Full body waxing
After full body waxing, remember that heat and friction may affect several areas at once. Loose clothing, gentle showers and a simple moisturising routine can make the first day much more comfortable.
At The Waxing Witch, we use Italwax White Chocolate Cream for body waxing and Italwax Pink Pearl for full body waxing clients with allergies, selecting the most suitable option as part of our skin-focused approach.
Intimate waxing
Intimate waxing is our primary expertise, and we tailor the treatment to your skin, hair and comfort. For intimate services, including Brazilian and Hollywood waxing, we use Italwax Gold.
Our technical approach, quality products and relaxed, judgment-free environment are all designed to help you feel comfortable throughout the appointment and confident with your aftercare afterwards.
Brow shaping
Our brow shaping service is perfect for a quick tidy-up when your brows need a little refresh. Afterward, avoid touching the area unnecessarily and keep strong skincare actives away from freshly waxed skin for a short while.
When to ask for help
A little redness immediately after waxing can be normal, but contact us or seek medical advice if you notice severe swelling, blistering, intense burning, spreading redness, heat, worsening pain or pus-filled bumps.
Do not exfoliate areas that are broken, bleeding or actively inflamed. Your skin should always be comfortable before you restart your routine.
