Ingrown Hairs After Waxing: Why They Happen & How to Banish Them for Good

Meta description: Discover why ingrown hairs happen after waxing and learn a simple skin-kind routine for smoother intimate waxing and full body waxing results.

If you’ve ever enjoyed beautifully smooth skin after a wax, only to notice small red bumps or trapped hairs appearing a few days later, you’re not alone. Ingrown hairs can happen after intimate waxing, full body waxing and facial hair removal : but they’re not a sign that your skin is cursed.

Usually, an ingrown hair happens when new growth curls back into the skin instead of travelling up and out through the follicle. Curly, coarse or tightly packed hair can be more likely to do this, as can friction, dry skin, over-exfoliation and hair that breaks rather than being removed cleanly from the root.

The good news? A consistent, gentle routine can help. Here’s our definitive guide to preventing and treating post-wax bumps, with a little friendly witchcraft and plenty of skin-health sense.

Why do ingrown hairs happen after waxing?

Waxing removes the visible hair and its root, but the follicle remains beneath the skin. As new hair begins to grow, it can sometimes:

Ingrown hairs are especially common around the bikini line, pubic area, underarms, legs and other places where hair is thicker or the skin experiences regular rubbing.

That’s why professional hair removal is about more than simply removing hair. Skin preparation, wax choice, technique and aftercare all have a part to play.

What happens behind the scenes at The Waxing Witch?

Intimate waxing is our primary expertise, and every appointment starts with looking at the skin : not just the hair.

Before we begin, we check:

We also use a fresh technique for each area. Hair does not grow in one uniform direction across the body, so we don’t treat a bikini line, thigh, underarm and lower leg as though they are all the same. We adjust the application, skin support, removal direction and pace to suit the area in front of us.

During your consultation, we can flag skin that appears more ingrown-prone and talk through a realistic aftercare plan. There’s no judgement and no embarrassment : just useful information to help you feel more confident in your skin.

For intimate waxing, we use Italwax Gold, selected for this specialist service. For full body waxing, we use Italwax Coral, while Italwax Pink Pearl is used for facial waxing. The right product and technique can make a real difference, particularly if you’re looking for waxing for sensitive skin.

Your first 48 hours: protect the skin barrier

Freshly waxed skin needs calm, not a vigorous scrub. For the first 24–48 hours:

This cooling-down period is one of the most important parts of good waxing aftercare. Exfoliating too soon can irritate the skin and create more bumps rather than fewer.

If you’ve had a Hollywood wax or Brazilian wax, it’s especially helpful to reduce friction during the first day or two. Give the skin a little breathing room while the follicles settle.

The simple exfoliation routine that helps prevent ingrown hairs

Once the skin feels calm : usually from around 48–72 hours after waxing : you can introduce gentle exfoliation.

The aim is to remove excess dead skin so new hairs have a clear path to the surface. The key word is gentle. You are polishing the skin, not trying to scrub an ingrown hair out by force.

How often should you exfoliate?

Start with two or three times a week. If your skin responds well, you can adjust the routine according to the area and your therapist’s advice.

For intimate areas and waxing for sensitive skin, start slowly. If you notice stinging, prolonged redness, dryness or soreness, reduce the frequency or stop and allow the skin to recover.

Physical or chemical exfoliation?

Both can be useful, but they work differently:

For many clients, we recommend Ruff Stuff scrub as a simple physical exfoliation option between appointments. Apply a small amount to damp skin, massage lightly in circular movements and rinse thoroughly. Do not press hard, and avoid using it on broken, freshly irritated or actively inflamed skin.

You do not need to use a rough mitt and a strong acid together. More exfoliation does not mean better results; overdoing it can compromise the skin barrier and encourage irritation.

Why moisturising matters

Exfoliation clears the surface, but moisturising helps keep the skin supple. When skin becomes dry and rough, it can be more difficult for new hair to grow through smoothly.

After bathing or showering, apply a lightweight, non-greasy moisturiser to the surrounding waxed skin. Daily moisturising can help:

Avoid applying rich, fragranced products immediately after waxing, particularly to intimate areas. If you’re unsure what suits your skin, ask us during your consultation.

What to do if a hair is growing back under the skin

If you notice a small bump or can see a hair curled beneath the surface, resist the urge to dig it out.

Instead:

  1. Pause waxing and shaving over that specific area until it settles.
  2. Apply a warm, clean compress for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Once the skin is no longer freshly waxed or sore, use very gentle exfoliation.
  4. Keep the area clean and moisturised.
  5. Allow the hair time to reach the surface naturally.

Do not use a needle, pin or your fingernails. Do not squeeze the bump, even if it looks tempting. Picking can introduce bacteria, worsen inflammation and increase the chance of scarring or dark marks.

If the hair tip becomes completely visible and loose at the surface, it may release naturally during gentle washing. Avoid pulling, digging or breaking the skin to reach it. When in doubt, leave it alone and ask a professional for advice.

When should an ingrown hair be checked professionally?

Most mild ingrown hairs settle within one to two weeks with gentle care. You should seek medical advice from your GP or NHS 111 if:

At The Waxing Witch, we can talk through your waxing routine and help identify possible triggers, but we cannot diagnose or treat infections. Medical concerns should always be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional. You can also read the Cleveland Clinic guide to ingrown hairs for further general information.
