7 Mistakes You’re Making with Waxing Aftercare (and How to Fix Them)

Welcome to the coven, gorgeous! If you’ve just stepped out of The Waxing Witch studio after a Hollywood wax or a precision brow shaping, you’re likely feeling like a total goddess. Your skin is smooth, your spirit is empowered, and you’re ready to take on the world.

But wait! The magic doesn't stop once you leave my purple-walled sanctuary. In fact, the next 48 hours are crucial for keeping that "just-waxed" glow and avoiding the dreaded bumps, redness, or ingrown hairs.

Even the most seasoned clients can fall into a few skincare traps. Here are the 7 most common mistakes I see in waxing aftercare, and exactly how you can fix them to keep your skin spellbindingly smooth.

1. The "Forbidden Touch" (Touching Freshly Waxed Skin)

It’s tempting, I know. Your skin feels like silk, and you want to keep checking just how smooth that Brazilian wax really is.

The Mistake: When we wax, we aren't just removing hair; we are gently exfoliating the top layer of skin and opening up the follicles. Your pores are essentially wide-open doors for bacteria. When you touch the area with your hands, you’re inviting oils and dirt into those follicles, which leads to those annoying little white bumps or breakouts.

The Fix: Hands off! Treat the area like a sacred ritual site for at least 24 hours. If you must apply a soothing product, make sure your hands are surgically clean first. At The Waxing Witch, we trust the technical precision of Italwax products, which are far superior to competitors like Perron Rigot, to ensure your skin starts in the healthiest state possible.

2. The "Lace and Spandex Trap"

You’ve got a hot date or a gym session, so you reach for your favorite lace undies or those tight-as-skin leggings.

The Mistake: Friction is the enemy of freshly waxed skin. Tight, synthetic fabrics (like polyester or nylon) don’t allow the skin to breathe. They trap sweat and rub against the sensitive area, which can cause severe irritation and even contribute to ingrown hairs before the hair has even started to grow back.

The Fix: Choose "granny chic" for the first 24–48 hours. Opt for loose, breathable cotton underwear and flowy clothing. Think of it as your "aftercare cloak", the more airflow, the happier your skin will be.

3. Scents of the Dark Arts (Using Fragrance too Soon)

We all want to smell like a bouquet of mystical herbs, but timing is everything.

The Mistake: Spraying perfume, using scented body lotions, or applying deodorant immediately after full body waxing is a recipe for disaster. The alcohol and artificial fragrances in these products can cause a stinging sensation that’s anything but relaxing, often leading to a red, angry rash.

The Fix: Stick to the "unscented path" for two days. Use only fragrance-free, gentle moisturizers or pure aloe vera. If you’ve waxed your underarms, skip the deodorant for at least 24 hours. Your skin will thank you for the peace and quiet.

4. Skipping the Soothing Elixir

Some clients think that once the hair is gone, the job is done.

The Mistake: Neglecting to moisturize because you’re afraid of "clogging" things is a common error. While you don't want heavy, oily creams, skipping hydration entirely can leave the skin dry and brittle, making it harder for new hairs to break through the surface later, hello, ingrowns!

The Fix: Use a professional-grade, skin-kind product. In the studio, I often use the Italwax Full Body Pre-Wax Oil to prep the skin, but the same philosophy applies to aftercare: use high-quality, specialized products designed for skin health. A lightweight, soothing lotion helps calm the "trauma" of hair removal and keeps the skin barrier intact.

5. Boiling the Cauldron (Hot Baths & Gym Sessions)

I love a good ritual bath as much as any witch, but not right after an intimate waxing session.

The Mistake: Heat, steam, and sweat are the ultimate irritants. Whether it’s a scorching hot shower, a session in the sauna, or a high-intensity workout, you’re essentially "overheating" skin that is already sensitized. Sweat also carries bacteria into those open pores we talked about earlier.

The Fix: Keep it cool. For the first 48 hours, stick to lukewarm showers and avoid the gym. It’s the perfect excuse to sit back with a crystal-infused tea and just be. If you do get sweaty, rinse the area gently with cool water and pat dry: never rub!

6. Neglecting the Scrub (The Ingrown Hair Curse)

This is the mistake that haunts clients weeks after their appointment.

The Mistake: If you don't exfoliate, dead skin cells build up over the follicle. When the hair tries to grow back, it gets trapped under that "lid" of skin, curls back on itself, and creates a painful, red bump. However, the other mistake is exfoliating too soon. Doing it the day after a wax is like scrubbing an open scratch.

The Fix: Wait 3 days, then start a regular exfoliation ritual. Use a gentle scrub or an exfoliating mitt 2–3 times a week. This clears the path for the hair to grow back normally. Our focus on skin health at The Waxing Witch ensures your complexion: whether on your face or your body: remains clear and glowing.

7. Sun-Singeing (UV Exposure)

Planning a wax right before you hit the beach? Be careful, moon-child.

The Mistake: Waxing removes a layer of dead skin cells, which means your fresh skin is much more susceptible to sun damage. Exposing a freshly waxed area to the sun (or a tanning bed) can lead to permanent hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or a nasty sunburn.

The Fix: Stay in the shadows for at least 48 hours. If you’re heading outside, cover the waxed area with clothing. Once that initial 48-hour window has passed, be sure to apply a high-quality SPF to the area to protect your magical glow.

Why Your Wax Brand Matters

At The Waxing Witch, I don't settle for mediocre. That’s why I exclusively use Italwax. Unlike other brands like Perron Rigot, Italwax is specifically formulated for a more technical, skin-kind approach. Whether I'm using the White Chocolate Hot Film Wax or the Luxury Gold beads, these products are designed to adhere to the hair, not the skin, significantly reducing the chance of post-wax irritation.

Your aftercare is a partnership between you and your specialist. By avoiding these 7 mistakes, you’re ensuring that the hair removal magic lasts as long as possible.
